Getting around in Bratislava
By car
- In the city centre there are 30 and 50 km/h zones. Try to keep within the limit.
- Parking is a problem, especially on weekdays. If you are looking for a free space, there are illuminated signs that will point you in the direction of the nearest car park with spaces.
- In most places in the centre you must pay to park on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Look for ticket sellers in yellow sleeveless jackets.
- If you want to be safe, use an underground garage (paid) or the P+R car park on the edge of the centre (free of charge).
- In the evening and at the weekend it is quite easy to park and get around by car. But remember not to drink and drive. There is a zero tolerance policy here for driving under the influence of alcohol.
- You can be stopped by municipal police (in blue uniforms) or national police (in green uniforms). If they give you a fine, they must also give you a receipt. At present the maximum fine is 67 €.

Taxi
- Very cheap in comparison with other major cities. It is cheaper than travelling around the city in your own car.
- Always book a taxi by telephone. You can recognise the numbers of taxi services because they all start with the number 16.
- Taking a taxi that you find in the street is much more expensive and comes with no guarantee. It is better not to do it.
- The taxi driver must have the meter switched on. The basic price ranges from 3 – 5 EUR

Public Transport
- In Bratislava there are buses, trolleybuses and trams.
- Tickets for municipal transport (MHD) can be bought in newsagents' kiosks, transport authority shops and from ticket machines (although these only take coins).
- All tickets have time limits (15 and 45 minutes).
- You can also buy tourist tickets for a whole day (3,50€), two days (6,50€), three days (8€) or for a week (12€). They are worth buying if you know you will be using municipal transport a lot.
- Don't forget that on boarding you must have the ticket stamped in one of the red machines located by every door. Without this, the ticket is invalid, you are travelling illegally and if an inspector catches you (they travel incognito, watch out for them!), it will cost you 50€.
- Most lines stop running before midnight. After that night buses run from the main station every two hours.
- In our experience, it is better to use a taxi after half past eleven in the evening.
Outside Bratislava
- Buses go to nearby towns from the Main Bus Station on Mlynské Nivy. Everyone knows where it is and will show you the way.
- Buses run more or less according to the timetable, which you can find at the station. Alternatively, the reception of your hotel can find it out for you. You can get to just about any Slovak town by bus.
- Most trains go from the Main Railway Station, which is in the centre of the city. If you are going to a large town, it is more comfortable than the bus, but also more expensive.
