Dinning in Bratislava

by UFO watch.taste. grooveby UFO watch.taste. grooveWe would agree with the numerous travel guides that recommend you try Prašná bašta on Zámočnícka st.11 as it's been around for a long time and is a staple of the Resteraunt scene in Bratislava. Also recommended is Archa, which is around the corner from the Archbishop's Palace in Primaciálne Square, and A-Klub on Panská st. 15 On Laurinská street is a wonderful Creperie Amelie, where crepes filled with both savoury and sweet fillings can be enjoyed. Staroslovenská krčma (the Old Slovak Pub) is in the pedestrian zone on Michalská street and another slovak restaurant you can find on Obchodná street, called Slovak Pub. Very close to Slovak Pub you can find another restaurant with traditional Slovak food, called Europa Pub. Try also very popular restaurant Verne, situated at Hviezdoslavovo square.

For tasty pizza and Italian food, go to Pizza Mizza on Tobrucká 5 or Patio Pizza, the cozy underground pizzeria under the Hotel Carlton on Hviezdoslavovo Square;

For atmosphere, go to the Berlinka Café Restaurant Domenico in the Esterházy Palace on Šafárikovo Square, which was built in 1872 on the former local granary. In the past, the dignified elite and high society of German nationality used to meet here. The sole Jewish restaurant Chez David can be found on Zámocká 13 in the castle settlement. Although it recently lost its kosher status, for 10 years it has maintained a stable level of high quality and they offer foreign kosher wines. The restaurant in the Hotel Perugia on Zelená 5 offers Hungarian cuisine. When you are in the mood for Chinese, go to the Bamboo Garden (Bambusová záhrada) on Františkánske Square 3; Fantastic sushi is prepared at the Tokyo Sushi Bar on Straková 2. The Café De Zwan on Panská Street 7 will grill up a juicy steak for you, but the wait staff will not ask your preference for degree of doneness, so unless you like medium, you’re better off pointing out your request.

During summer heat waves, buy an ice cream at the stand in the center of Hviezdoslavovo Square and a walk in the shade of the tall chestnut trees will allow you to become a true Bratislavan, at least for a while.

For Mexican and Spanish food, go to the Hacienda Mexicana on Sedlárska 6 or Tapas Bar&Restaurant Rambla on Michalská street. For a more classy but probably the best spanish cuisine, go to Park Cafe in Budkova street 39 (near Horsky Park).

Hands down, the restaurant with the best view of the capital city is in Restaurant Veza the Kamzík television tower on Koliba. You can enjoy the Danube waterfront at Au-café and Leberfinger, both of which are located on the right bank.

If you aren’t feeling very hungry, which shouldn’t be the case after a stroll through Bratislava, go and have at least a dessert and some coffee in one of the patisseries on the Main Square. It would be a sin, especially during the summer months, not to stop here and soak up the atmosphere of downtown Bratislava.

Special restaurants:

Restaurant Camouflage on Venturska, 1 and UFO on the top of the tower of the "new bridge" are 2 of the bests restaurant in Trend’s list of top restaurants in Slovakia. Probably as well 2 of the most expensive restaurants.

French Restaurant in Hotel Devín on Riečna st.4 is third on last year’s list of best restaurant. The name originates from the traditional manner of French service. The elegant and comfortable interior, professional service and Slovak, French and international cuisine will appeal to you.

Tempus Fugit on Sedlárska st. 5 is one of the most beautiful restaurants in Slovakia; it is located in a restored, 15th century house. You can sit in the entry section with its arches, atrium and porticos, on the balcony or in the cellar. They have great steaks and fish and an exceptionally large selection of wines. As the name itself implies (tempus fugit – time flies), time spent in this pleasant atmosphere will pass quickly.

“Welcome pilgrims and trust that you will not regret crossing our doorstep” is how guests are welcomed by the restaurant Traja mušketieri (Three Musketeers) on Sládkovičova st.7. They offer The Charm of Lady Constance, The Queen’s Whims or the soup Grandma Planchet’s Hen. Who could resist?

Restaurant Caribic’s on Žižkova 1/A is the right place for lovers of seafood specialties as well as fans of international cuisine. A pleasant while can also be had in the winter garden, which also breathes a sea atmosphere.
